Early Years Practitioner (EYP) Level 2 & Level 3
Reporting to: Room Leader / Nursery Manager
Summary of role:
To contribute a high standard of physical, emotional, social, and intellectual care for all children in the nursery. To give support to other team members throughout the nursery. To work as part of a team in order to provide an enabling environment in which all individual children can play, learn, and develop.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- To contribute to a programme of activities that meet the individual needs and interests of children in your area in conjunction with other team members.
- To keep records of your key children’s (where you have Key Children) development and learning journeys and share this with parents, carers, and other key adults in the child’s life.
- Engage in good team working.
- Liaise with and support parents and other family members.
- To attend occasional out of working hours activities, e.g., training, monthly staff meetings, parents evening, fundraising events etc.
- To be flexible within working practices of the nursery. Be prepared to help where needed, including to undertake certain domestic jobs within the nursery, e.g., preparation of snack meals, cleansing of equipment etc.
- Work alongside the Nursery Manager and staff team to ensure that the nursery’s philosophy is fulfilled.
- Read, understand, and adhere to all policies and procedures relevant to your role as deemed appropriate by the Manager.
- Recording accidents via the Nursery system – FAMLY. This included existing injuries.
- Look upon the nursery as a “whole” where can your help be most utilised, be constantly aware of the individual needs of all children.
- To respect the confidentiality of all information received for both children & staff.
- The preparation and completion of activities daily to suit each individual child’s stage of development and interests.
- To develop your role within the team especially with regard as a key person.
- To ensure that mealtimes are a time of pleasant social sharing and educational for the children.
- Washing and changing children as required – cover may be required for other rooms where needed.
- To ensure good standards of safety, hygiene and cleanliness are maintained at all times adhering to the nursery standards and deep cleans weekly.
- Ensuring a poorly child is kept calm and warm and management/room leaders is notified immediately.
- To develop and maintain strong partnerships and communications with parents/carers to facilitate day-to-day caring and early learning needs.
- To ensure the provision of a high-quality environment to meet the needs of individual children regardless of any disabilities, family backgrounds or medical history.
- To be aware of the high profile of the nursery and to uphold its standards at all times, both within work hours and outside.
- To complete in house training and attend training off site sessions where applicable.
Early Years Practitioner Essential Skills:
you will need to have the following qualifications, training, and experience:
- At least Level 2 in early years/childcare qualification or equivalent
- Experience of nurturing and encouraging children/colleagues
- Experience of implementing enjoyable activities for children
- Good understanding of children’s needs and some understanding of child development
- Good customer service and partnership skills to develop and maintain relationships with colleagues and parents
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and children
- Ability to observe, comment and write clearly
- Knowledge and understanding of equal opportunities and diversity Desirable Skills
- NVQ level 3 or above/equivalent qualification
- Experience of working with children (under 5’s) within a nursery or childcare setting
- Understanding and practice of the EYFS

Deputy Room Lead
Lead the team of staff, being able to motivate, delegate and create a great team ethos
- Adhere to the requirements of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and Ofsted. Through provided fun and engaging activities
- Adhere to the settings code of conduct.
- Plan weekly for the room/age group (with support from your staff) and complete evaluation of activities where necessary
- Update parents on their child’s day and development with invaluable professional feedback
- Interact, supervise and keep the children safe and happy as well as supporting the nursery team in the day-to-day running of the nursery
- Understand and adhere to the settings safeguarding policies and procedures to keep children safe and secure at all times, and ensure others at the setting are adhering to the policy.
- Deal with child protection issues, reporting any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead/Deputy for the setting and record factual information accurately.
